Local Club member wins State Youth of the Year Award

Orlando Jones, a three-year member of the Boys and Girls Club of Phillips County, has been named the Youth of the Year for the State of Arkansas by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).  

The Youth of the Year designation is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive and comes in recognition of a member’s outstanding contributions to his or her family, school, community, and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.  The state Youth of the Year award is accompanied by a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

Jones is currently attending the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Two Club members win first place in SW region digital arts competition

Local Club members Desilyn Redd and Me’Kale Carter were named first place winners in The 2008 Boys & Girls Club Southwest Regional Digital Arts festival, netting the top award in two of the three age categories for the Photo Tech competition.  The local Club was one of more than 700 Boys & Girls Club units in the Southwest Region eligible to participate in the digital design competition, which aims to provide youth with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-related college programs and careers.

 

In addition to the regional wins, Desilyn Redd was recently named the national winner for the Teen Choice competition in the 10-12 age group.
